The train is a nice metaphor for the journey of life. A nice example is the Hindi movie, दोस्त (Dost). This was the first full length Hindi film that I remember seing in a theatre thanks to my chitthi, now living somewhere in Australia. It starred Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha and is a watchable film to this day.
There is nice song in it, (Gaadi bulaa rahi hai). Lyrics in Hindi and transliterated English here. Anand Bakshi's lyrics, Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music and the incomparable Kishore Kumar's voice make this song a real pleasure.
The second verse goes:
आगे तूफ़ान, पीछे बरसात, ऊपर गगन में बिजली
सोचे न बात, दिन हो के रात, सिगनल हुआ के निकली
देखो वो आ रही है, देखो वो जा रही है |
aage tuufaan, piichhe barasaat, uupar gagan me.n bijalii
dekho vo aa rahii hai, dekho vo jaa rahii hai .
My free translation for this would be as follows:
Stormy ahead, whistling through rain, lightning in the sky,
Not giving a thought, whether day or night, keeps moving when the light turns green
Thus it arrives, Thus it departs.
This is a nice illustration of Geeta 2-15
samaduHkhasukha.n dhiira.n so.amR^itatvaaya kalpate .. 2\-15..
That man,to whom pleasure and pain are the same, is fit for realising the Immortality of the Self.
The Geeta's message in shloka 2-48 समत्वं योग उच्यते samatva.n yoga uchyate (Yoga is equanimity of mind) comes through nicely in the 4th verse:
गाड़ी को देख, कैसी है नेक, अच्छा बुरा न देखे
सब हैं सवार, दुश्मन के यार, सबको चली ये लेके
जीना सिखा रही है, मरना सिखा रही है ।
gaa.
sab hai.n savaar, dushman ke yaar, sabako chalii ye leke
jiinaa sikhaa rahii hai, maranaa sikhaa rahii hai.
My free translation would be:
See the train, the simple intent, no good nor bad
Everyone aboard, friend and foe, on it goes with all aboard
Showing the way to live, Showing the way to die!
While the Youtube movie does not have the full song, you can enjoy this nice rendition by Subas Upadhyay.
What I need to do this year is to find an opportunity to travel by train on my next trip to India. Long time since I did that. My other Geeta in Bollywood posts are here, here and here and here for the Hollywood post.
Hari Om and Namaskaar until the next post
